Once a beacon of constitutional conservatism, now a platform giving relevance to the alt-right’s dark agenda, the Heritage Foundation is testing my patience.
Once a beacon of hope for constitutional patriots, it now finds itself entangled in a disturbing alliance with figures who are more synonymous with white supremacy, anti-Semitism, and dangerous conspiracy theories than the ideals it once championed. The rise of individuals like Nick Fuentes, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Tucker Carlson within the alt-right conservative movement has set the stage for a terrifying shift in America’s political discourse, and the Heritage Foundation is enabling it.
The Shift from Conservatism to Extremism
Once a think tank for principled conservative values, the Heritage Foundation has, in recent years, handed a microphone to individuals who peddle extremist views under the guise of “America First” nationalism. Nick Fuentes, a man who openly denies the Holocaust, calls for the “death penalty” for Jewish elites and advocates for a white-dominated America, was recently given a platform at this institution. Not to be outdone, Marjorie Taylor Greene, a sitting U.S. congresswoman, continues to flirt with Holocaust denial and anti-Semitic tropes while still enjoying the backing of the conservative base. Meanwhile, Tucker Carlson, the once-respected conservative voice, now uses his platform to normalize these fringe ideologies, turning dangerous conspiracy theories into mainstream talking points.
These figures, once considered far-right fringe, have become a part of the conservative establishment’s ecosystem. Their growing influence poses a serious threat to the future of American conservatism.
How Did We Get Here?
The Heritage Foundation’s backing of these individuals can be traced to a broader trend within the Republican Party — a move towards an “America First” agenda, where patriotism is weaponized to promote xenophobia and racial division. The embrace of figures like Fuentes and Carlson is a direct result of this shift. Instead of standing as guardians of freedom and democracy, many on the far-right have turned inward, cultivating a toxic environment where racism, anti-Semitism, and other forms of bigotry are not just tolerated, but actively encouraged and exchanged.
The Danger of Silence: How the Heritage Foundation’s “Neutrality” Aids Extremism
By choosing to remain silent or offer weak condemnations, the Heritage Foundation allows the far-right fringe to infiltrate the mainstream conservative movement. Heritage president Kevin Roberts’ recent statements defending Tucker Carlson as a “close friend” while condemning Fuentes’ anti-Semitism are troubling. Roberts may distance himself from Fuentes’ hate speech, but by continuing to embrace Carlson, who regularly platforms these dangerous figures, he sends a message that the line between mainstream conservatism and extremism is increasingly blurry.
The failure to draw a clear line between traditional conservative values and the hatred espoused by these alt-right figures is not just a moral failure. It is a political one. This is the same kind of appeasement that allowed white supremacy to fester in European politics during the 20th century. The Heritage Foundation, by remaining complicit in the rise of these forces, is doing more than just making a political misstep; it is risking the very soul of American conservatism.
Bottom Line: A Call for Accountability
The conservative movement once stood for values like liberty, free markets, and limited government. These were ideals that transcended race, religion, and ethnicity. But now, those values are being hijacked by figures who seek to divide the nation along racial lines, sowing distrust and hatred wherever they go.
It’s time for institutions like the Heritage Foundation to make a choice. Will they stand with the America First crowd — a group that views racial purity as paramount and questions the legitimacy of entire religions? Or will they reclaim their founding principles, reject the extremism that’s creeping into their ranks, and return to the values that once made them a beacon for constitutional conservatives?
If they don’t, we may be witnessing the end of the conservative movement as we know it. And, worse, America’s future could be decided by the very forces that seek to tear it apart.
We are so screwed.
