City leaders have spent years preaching about taxing the wealthy and championing social causes—while ignoring the basics of fiscal responsibility. Now, a looming fiscal emergency signals just how badly mismanagement has caught up to the city.
Legal Payouts Drain the Budget
Hundreds of millions of dollars are being siphoned off to cover legal settlements from scandals that could have been prevented with proper oversight. Meanwhile, critical public services remain underfunded, leaving residents to pay the price for years of negligence.
Fantasies of Profit, Reality of Loss
While officials chased Olympic revenues and other high-profile projects, essential infrastructure and city services were neglected. Projects remain unfinished, budgets remain out of balance, and taxpayers are left footing the bill for grandiose plans that never materialized.
SMRR and Disrespect for Private Property

Welcoming Transients: Downtown in Crisis
Santa Monica has also earned a reputation for permissive policies toward transients, many of whom occupy streets, parks, and public spaces with little enforcement. Closing Santa Monica Airport and Purging Industry
In a move emblematic of the city’s short-sightedness, Santa Monica leaders have pursued closure of the Santa Monica Airport, a critical lifeline in emergencies, to make way for high-end housing and maximize tax revenue. This decision reflects a broader pattern: the city has systematically purged industrial and manufacturing activity, replacing it with high-paid “knowledge workers” while abandoning practical infrastructure that serves the community. The result is a city increasingly ill-prepared for emergencies, overdependent on tourism and elite professionals, and prioritizing profit and ideology over public safety and long-term viability.

Santa Monica’s crisis is proof that good intentions cannot replace financial competence. Virtue signaling, social experiments, and political posturing cannot hide mismanagement or make money appear where none exists. Will the rich folk who want you to pay your fair share pony up? Not likely, because they are using their expensive consultants to minimize their payout.
