From Defender to Decorative Prop
The Anti-Defamation League was once the iron fist protecting Jewish Americans. Real consequences. Real law enforcement partnerships. Real deterrence. Today? It’s a prestige-brand NGO obsessed with virtue signaling and microaggressions, patting itself on the back while real threats surge. The ADL isn’t defending Jews anymore; it’s performing woke theater.
Obama’s Legacy: Turning Grit Into Gutless Compliance
Enter Jonathan Greenblatt, Obama fellow traveler (Special Assistant to Barack Obama and Director of the Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation) and poster child for progressive capture. Under his watch, the ADL traded principles for political points. Fighting anti-Semitism isn’t about confronting violence anymore; it’s about curating outrage to stay on the left’s good side. Hashtags over prosecutions. Glossaries over guts. Meanwhile, Jewish students get assaulted, communities get terrorized, and the ADL claps politely from the sidelines.
Diluting the Mission: Islamophobia Over Urgency
And if that weren’t enough, the ADL diluted its mission to absurdity. Anti-Semitism is treated as just another “form of hate,” lumped together with Islamophobia, general prejudice, and other abstract offenses. This false equivalency is more than symbolic; it’s deadly. By pretending that all hate is morally interchangeable, the ADL signals Jewish safety is negotiable, eroding its credibility, and leaving communities exposed to violence.
Selective Outrage: A Dangerous Hypocrisy
Let’s be clear: the ADL barks at the right and whimpers at the left. Radical left-wing anti-Zionism, the real threat to Jewish life on campuses and in the streets, barely earns a peep. Conservative defenders of Israel? Labeled “divisive.” The moral hierarchy under Obama-era progressivism is absurd: victimhood determines virtue, not the severity of the threat.
The Jewish Community’s Own Complicity
Even more maddening: many Jewish institutions silently enabled this decline. Once-fierce defenders now tally intersectional virtue points. American Jewry still leans left, nostalgic for alliances that no longer exist. Meanwhile, left-wing radicalism paints Jewish identity as oppression and Israel as colonialism. And the ADL, terrified of losing progressive credibility, refuses to fight back. Paralysis reigns, and the very defenders of Jewish life are busy policing their own.
Education Theater: Symbolism Over Safety
The ADL also doubled down on the theatrical. Holocaust tours, workshops on microaggressions, and lesson plans on inclusivity are all meaningless when the real threat is radical left-wing extremism, street violence, and campus harassment. Education isn’t deterrence. Press releases aren’t protection. The ADL’s obsession with optics makes the community vulnerable while its leaders bask in self-congratulation.
Can the ADL Be Saved, or Is It Too Late?
Maybe. But only if it drops the woke virtue signaling, abandons false equivalencies like Islamophobia is equivalent to antisemitism, stops policing allies, and returns to its roots: deterrence, coalition-building, and unapologetic civic defense. Until then, it’s a cautionary tale of what happens when ideology overtakes mission. Under Obama’s shadow, the ADL traded courage for compliance, and the Jewish community continues to pay the price.
We are so screwed.
