Good news, Californians! Your state government has finally solved homelessness, crime, drug overdoses, and collapsing infrastructure. Just kidding — they’ve decided to ban cops from wearing masks.
That’s right. With great fanfare and zero self-awareness, Governor Gavin “Hair Gel” Newsom has signed Senator Scott “Twitter’s Most Active Gay Legislator” Wiener’s SB 627, better known as the No Secret Police Act. Because what California really needed was another performative law pretending to stop problems that don’t exist while ignoring the ones that do.
, California Governor Gavin Newsom just signed Senator Scott Wiener’s latest vanity project, SB 627 — the so-called No Secret Police Act.
SB 627, Wiener. Law enforcement: masks.
Existing law makes it a misdemeanor to wear a mask, false whiskers, or any personal disguise, as specified, with the purpose of evading or escaping discovery, recognition, or identification while committing a public offense, or for concealment, flight, evasion, or escape from arrest or conviction for any public offense.
This bill would make it a crime for a law enforcement officer to wear a facial covering in the performance of their duties, except as specified. The bill would define law enforcement officer as anyone designated by California law as a peace officer who is employed by a city, county, or other local agency, and any officer or agent of a federal law enforcement agency or law enforcement agency of another state, or any person acting on behalf of a federal law enforcement agency or agency of another state. The bill would make a violation of these provisions punishable as an infraction or a misdemeanor, as specified. [California Legislative Counsel]
Constitution? Never Heard of It.
Apparently, the crack legal minds in Sacramento skipped the whole Supremacy Clause thing in the Constitution. That’s the part where federal law beats state law every time. So when ICE agents wear masks, Sacramento can scream, cry, and write as many “urgent” bills as they want — it won’t matter. Here’s the problem: California doesn’t have the authority to tell federal officers how to dress, what to eat for breakfast, or anything else.
Article VI, Paragraph 2 of the U.S. Constitution.
“This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding.”
But hey, this isn’t about reality. It’s about looking brave in front of the cameras. SB 627 is basically a taxpayer-funded Instagram filter for Scott Wiener.
Selective Outrage: Criminals in Masks = Fine, Cops in Masks = Criminals
Here’s the kicker: California already has laws against wearing a mask while committing a crime. And how often are those enforced against rioters, looters, or “mostly peaceful protesters” smashing windows in Oakland?
Never. Not once. Nada.
However, SB 627 states that if a cop wears a mask, that’s the crime. Translation: if you’re torching a Walgreens while dressed like a ninja, you’re a freedom fighter. If you’re an ICE agent in a mask, you’re basically Darth Vader.
Makes sense, right?
Bureaucracy: The One Thing Sacramento Still Knows How to Do
This law even requires police departments to waste time writing “mask policies” and posting them online by 2026. Because what keeps Californians awake at night isn’t fentanyl in the streets — it’s not knowing whether their local sheriff has a face-covering policy.
And if activists don’t like the policy? Boom: lawsuits. Because nothing says “California governance” like endless court battles over masks while businesses board up and families flee the state.
The Real Outcome: Literally Nothing
Here’s what will actually happen:
- Federal agents laugh in Sacramento’s face.
- Courts strike this down.
- Local cops get buried in paperwork.
- Criminals keep wearing masks.
- Californians keep getting screwed.
But Wiener gets headlines. Newsom gets to virtue signal. Mission accomplished.
Bottom Line
SB 627 is not about public safety. It’s about political branding. It’s about grandstanding for cameras while ignoring the collapse of basic governance in California.
SB 627 proves California’s leaders aren’t just out of touch — they’re cartoon characters. When masked rioters skate free but masked cops face charges, the state isn’t run by lawmakers. It’s run by clowns. And the circus music just keeps getting louder.
We are so screwed.
