When Barack Obama appears in a polished campaign spot urging Californians to “vote Yes on 50,” it feels like déjà vu. The cadence is the same, the calm authority, the appeal to “save democracy.” Yet beneath that practiced delivery lies the same brand of selective truth-telling that has infected American politics for more than a decade.

It’s a script designed to inflame fear and loyalty rather than to inform.
